OKC Metro Employer Council hit it out of the park last Tuesday.
Packed room, great topic, beautiful location. The speaker from the Oklahoma
State University Business School, Dr. Lee Manzer did not disappoint. His speech was a shortened version of his day-long seminar on Entitlement in the Workplace.
Here are some of the highlights:
1. Organizational Culture is not a fad. You can control it.
2. If an organization is doing well, an entitlement culture is likely to be created.
3. Entitlement can come from too much security, too many rules, and no
competition.
4. If you increase anxiety in your workers, you will increase
productivity. If you increase fear in your workers, you will decrease
productivity. A fine line.
5. Don’t be afraid to offend your subordinates.
6. The most powerful information is transmitted through stories.
7. To change an organization with an entitlement culture you have to change its stories.
Dr. Lee Manzer’s style of speaking is conversational, direct,
and full of stories, which I love. He is like a narrator to an exciting movie
that changes scenes from moment to moment. You can SEE his stories. His
vignettes ranged from a joke about two older couples, a cat on a hot stove,
the history of the baby boomers, college student home for the summer,
prison employees, and his own family.
What I came away with from the meeting (apart from a sore hand from taking notes) was this: First: People who do well, like to be held accountable. The ones who do poorly, need to be held accountable.
Second: Don’t be afraid to expect a lot out of your employees.
Third: Stories are POWERFUL!
If you want to learn more about this topic, let me
know. There may be a part 3 hidden somewhere in the depths of my mind.
Also, if you are looking for a new career or if you are looking for great talent in the OKC area, TRC Staffing Services is here for you. We love what we do and care about our clients and employees.
