Looking for a new job has been rated as being more stressful as the birth of a child, moving, giving a speech and even getting married! Deciding that it is time to leave where you are currently working is a big step. Or, if you’ve been laid off you may be doing a lot of soul-searching. What do I want to do now? Some people don’t go that deep, because of their financial situation. For many, finding a new job is a race against bills. Will I have my next paycheck before my house payment/rent is due?
No matter what your reason is for looking for a new position, the unknown can be scary. Will I fit in? Do I have the skills to do the job? Will the job be fulfilling?
Once you have decided it is time to make that leap into the world of the job hunt, remember these 6 tips. They just may help you find the “work home” of your dreams!
1) Take care of yourself. In order to be your best self, get rest, eat well, exercise. No-one wants to hire someone who looks exhausted and doesn’t feel good about themselves.
2) Look your best. Have an outfit or two that is specifically for interviewing. Get other’s opinions on your choice of attire and definitely pick out your clothes (and make sure they still fit) well before the day of your interview.
3) Once you get that interview, remember never, ever speak poorly of a past employer. Practice speaking about your reason for leaving a position with a trusted friend. Then critically analyze your answer. Would you want to hire someone with that answer?
4) Grieve. Get it out. If you are sad about losing your last job, cry about it. Yell about it. Write a story about it. Whatever you do, don’t stuff the emotions down so deep that they come back up later.
5) Make a list of everything you want in a new job. Make a list of everything you don’t want in a new job. Look at your priorities and decide what hours you would like to work, what part of town would be best, what type of environment you would prefer. Then, when you come across the right job, you can feel confident about your decision.
6) Apply at a staffing service. Or three. Staffing services are great for seeing what positions are out there and assisting you with the search. At our office, our candidates are our movie stars and we’re their agents. Finding your next role is a lot easier with professionals that know the industry.
Finally, remember to take deep breaths and remember: the skills that found you your last job, can find you your next job. Don’t let the fear take over your thoughts. I love this quote: “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become.”
I encourage you to conquer your quest for your next job. Be open to new opportunities and the adventure of discovering where your path will lead you. If you would like assistance please give us a call. We would love to help. 405-842-6300
