Each year, Susan and I (and sometimes an additional person from our office) get the opportunity to attend our corporate office’s “Kick-Off Meeting”. In early January, we hop on a plane, fly to Atlanta, and spend 3 to 4 days with other franchise owners, recruiters, sales staff, and leaders of TRC Staffing Services to get the New Year off to a great start. Its part pep rally, part seminars, part cheesecake eating marathon. (Lots of yummy food; not good for a new year’s diet plan.)
As a lifetime learner and note-taking freak of nature, I love all of opportunities we have to learn at the event. Our president always discusses our past year and what goals we have for the coming year. We have writers and experts in the field speak to the company about technology and trends. It is a time to discover new ideas and to share what has worked for certain offices and the challenges facing other locations.
This year though, was extra special. Oklahoma City’s very own, Susan Frew, had reached a milestone. The award she received has never been given before in the 35 year history of TRC Staffing Services. She was recognized for her 30 Years of Dedicated Service to TRC Staffing Services as a franchise owner.
I am so proud that we are the oldest TRC franchise in the nation. I’m in awe of the dedication and drive I see each day in Susan. I’m so lucky to have shared this rocky, rewarding, and personally transforming journey with her for the past 17 years working with her at our “little shop of staffing”.
I can remember my first placement that didn’t work out. I felt so ashamed, embarrassed, and humiliated. Actually calling the client and telling them our candidate was not returning to the assignment felt like the end of the world for me back in 1998. The other members of our crew felt a little bit of pity for me. They said “There’s no crying in Staffing!” laughingly adapting a quote from the grouchy coach played by Tom Hanks in the movie “League of their Own”.
Now, I rarely sweat the small stuff. Now, I am realistic that problems may come up, but if you under promise and over deliver, things seem to always work out. Now, my days are filled with seeing the big picture, while paying attention to the details too. Now I feel thankful for every day I get to come to the office, work with a talented team, and actually get paid for having fun. To be completely transparent, there are times when I have to let someone go, or end an assignment, and that is not fun. But inevitably the good moments definitely outweigh the bad.
Another thing that was really cool about the meeting this year was the theme they chose, “Be Remarkable”. One of my New Year’s resolutions was to embrace the word “Mindful”. I thought I could apply it at work through being focused and present in each interaction as Co-Owner of TRC Staffing Services.
At the meeting they explained the theme to mean we will continue to be a world-class staffing organization, but we want to discover and do the things that will be more than expected and “remarkable”/memorable to others. Doing our job is good, but doing our job to the point that our clients and candidates go home and say, “I can’t believe what happened today! TRC IS AWESOME!”
After the week was over, I vowed when I returned to OKC, I would make my enthusiasm contagious. I would engage with others to the point that my happiness, drive, and genuine concern for our clients and candidates would be seen, felt, and heard.
We are all here for such a short time. Being able to positively impact others’ lives while we’re here is one of the greatest gifts we can receive, in my humble opinion.
Jobs are out there, all over the place. But when you are able to do something that is a calling, you are truly blessed. Some people have hobbies, memberships, or other roles separate from their occupation which inspires them. Others are lucky enough to get to do their passion and get paid for it. That's how I feel!
If you are looking for a position where you can make a difference, please take a look at our openings. If you are looking to add to your staff, we would love to help!
